Do I need work experience?
No project management work experience is required. You must meet PMI’s age, secondary education, and project management education requirements.
How many education hours do I need?
At least 23 hours of project management education, completed before the exam. Review the qualifying education guidance and retain your completion records.
How long is the exam?
The CAPM exam has 150 questions and a 180-minute time limit. Of those questions, 135 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions.
How much does the exam cost?
Check the fee shown by PMI for your location and membership status before paying. This wiki does not publish a fixed price because fees and applicable taxes may change.
Can I take the exam from home?
PMI offers secure online testing as well as Pearson VUE testing centers. Confirm availability and the equipment, workspace, and identification requirements before booking.
What if I do not pass?
You can attempt the exam up to three times in your one-year eligibility period. That means one initial attempt and up to two additional attempts. Consult the handbook for fees and what happens after eligibility ends or all attempts are used.
Do I need to read every reference book?
No. The exam outline says reading every book on its reference list is not required. Use the outlined tasks to guide your preparation and choose materials that cover all four domains.
How do I keep my certification active?
Earn 15 qualifying PDUs in each three-year cycle, meet the category requirements, report them through PMI, and complete the renewal payment.
